 Life as a solider

  • The soldier's lived in long narrow trenches with terrible conditions. They didn’t have much food and survived on little rations. They used weapons such as bayonets and grenades. On the other side was the Germans trenches. In between them was some land known as no man's land.

  • The soldiers used to play card games and write letters in their spare time. They only got a few hours of sleep in the afternoon but had to rotate watch in case the other side pushed them.

What Caused WW1?

  • The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

  • A group called the black hand sent assassins to kill Franz however there first attempt failed but the second attempt was successful.

  • Nationalism

  •  Each country trying to prove their dominance. The war was mainly based on the desire for the Slavic people to no longer be a part of the Austria Hungary.

  • Militarism

  • Germany had the greatest military build-up  and had more navies in the time. The increase in  militarism helped pushed the war and create the conflict between enemy countries.

Conscientious Objection

  • This was created to protest the war and object to going. A lot of these people were put in prison beat by the public and slandered so bad, they couldn’t live normal lives as getting a job was extremely hard and most of the men had gone to war. In prison they were beat by other inmates as the guards watched and ignored them.

Temple Run (Game)

  • (INFO) Temple Run  Is a game made in 2011 for Android and iOS, the game came to a large financial success due to the popularity of the game. The developer insisted using movement of the device to dictate the character movement and made Temple Run more iconic and rememberable.

  • (Gameplay) The game consists of constantly moving forward without stopping, while being chased by a monster.

  • Main concepts of this game.

  • Enemy forcing the player to keep running-

  • Coins used as currency to buy items from store

  • Obstacles for the player to dodge

  • Score at the end. With the game getting progressively harder the further you go.

  • (UI/Gameplay Design) This game has a unique design due to the nature of it being an ancient temple which they took inspiration from. Allowing the game to have a good concept and background. The knowledge of the world is limited and there is no dialogue or any reason(quest) to go forward. Which I feel lack's purpose within the game.

Canabalt (game)

  • (INFO) This game is a 2D endless runner, where the player keeps running from an unknown threat. This game is different from other endless runners as the landscape is procedurally generated therefore the game only ends when the player falls to their death. Environmental objects like crates cause the player to decrease in speed.

  • (Gameplay) The main gameplay loop is running though procedurally generated landscapes and jump large buildings.

  • Main concepts of this game.

  • Unknown threat chasing the player.

  • The player acceleration increases.

  • The player slows down when they hit an object.

  • (UI/Gameplay Design) The game Is a 2D Side Scroller and is mainly using grey scale to define the artistic style of the game as the game has no bright colours visually

Vector Run

  • (INFO) This game was made by Nekki who developed the shadow fight series, which is well known with its amazing art style and combat for mobile games. Vector Run was a game they developed which was very unique and different from their mainstream game and offered a runner esc parkour game.

  • (Gameplay) The main gameplay loop is running from the law as they challenge your skills and timing when vaulting or climbing on objects or walls. Timing the climb or vault right allows the player to keep the same speed and escape the enforcer. The game has levels instead of procedurally generated environments and consist of easy, normal and hard.

  • Main concepts of this game.

  • Enforcer chasing the player

  • The player losses speed when vaulting to early or jumping

  • Once the player reaches a certain point the level ends.

  • (UI/Gameplay Design) The game Is a 2D Runner which has skills that the player can unlock to acquire new vaults which increase the player overall score at the end of the game. The game characters are black only showing the silhouette of the movements of the characters

Ghost Of Tsushima

 =

  • (INFO) This game was something different due the story and gameplay as you can imagine being a samurai without touching a katana. The gameplay was hard due to precise timing and good situational movement of the player as death can come quick to those that don’t pay attention.

  •  (Story) The story was based of real-life events of the Mongol forces invading the Japanese and one samurai survives the first invasion. The real event was in 1274.

  • (Inspiration) This game inspires my project as the story isn't set in stone as our hero Jin/samurai loses the people closest to him in an instance and the game does an amazing job exploring the concepts of betrayal, loneliness and despair throughout its story.

  •  I want my project to give people a sense of these feeling for the people that passed away during ww1 and emulating this feeling I believe that an endless runner can portray a sense of despair as you are always back in the game and are experiencing tense life and death moments.

The Witcher 3

 =

  • (INFO) The game is based on a book written by Andrzej Sapkowski. He is a polish fantasy writer and his books have sold 15 million units. Also, his books have been translated in 37 different languages

  • (Story) This game explores a lot of themes, for example death, betrayal, Love and Loneliness though the intertwined stories from finding your lost adopted daughter. As you explore the world you see how the world is ruled by greed and corruption.

  • Humans pay Witcher's to kill monsters but then look down upon them as a different kind of monsters while they do the dirty work.

  • (Inspiration) I was inspired by this game as soldiers who didn't go to war for medical reasons or just didn’t want to go, where looked down beat and publicly humiliated. playing this game shows me that no matter what place you are at their will always be corruption. The game & books show this perfectly with their vivid descriptions and views on life as they must have been inspired by some form of internal conflict within society.

Yakuza 0

 =

  • (INFO) This game is based on real life yakuza. Yakuza are a group of violent people in a gang and are separated into families. They can't leave to pursue normal lives as the consequence of leaving is so heavy as to losing one's finger or life.

  • (Story) The story of the main characters are rememberable as they go into depth of the emotions, they experience throughout the game. They live by a code and if they harm civilians they would get punished by the patriarch.

  • (Inspiration) This experience was one of the reasons I chose to do a hard topic to present in games as when I played this game, I knew nothing about the yakuza and this game educated me on the struggle in japan for people that had no choice but to join the yakuza.

Assassin’s Creed III

 =

  • (INFO) The game story is based of real life and presents both sides of the conflict and educates the players on these events while being historically correct.

  • (Story) Though the narrative and gameplay the player becomes attached to the main character due to his persona and native upbringing coming from humble beginnings. As they were living peacefully the white Americans burnt their houses and slaughtered their kind. This gives the player a sense of revenge however throughout the game you learn about both sides as stories conflict until the main character learns his father is American the very man he killed.

  • (Inspiration) This game influenced me as the conflict with white Americans and the native Americans led to countless deaths and how the game portrays this theme inspired my project to have the same impact or weight to it.
